They are both excellent.
The 9-5 is a good deal bigger than the 3 series inside, if you have a family the 9-5 is the only real option, even a rear facing child seat is a squeeze in the back of the 3er, never mind an unruly teen.
The 3er is a lot crisper off the line and on initial throttle application, but the 9-5aero will roar past it again, it has visceral in gear acceleration. They are both a joy to drive, but different.
The 3er is actually more economical despite the larger engine, and has that lovely sounding smooth six. It also has far superior traction control than the dim witted saab (2001 model) version, and is just so competent in so many areas.
Of course the BM costs more to start with, is smaller, costs more to insure (about 15% for us, and thats direct comparison - same coverage, drivers, address etc) and doesnt have that amazing midrange.
As far as image goes, if you just want the blue propellor to impress people then go ahead, a saab wont do that for you - but thats one of the good things about them. I suspect thats not the case as your asking here.
