My observations:
- I hope you did not pay anywhere near $ 40 k for your Saab
- You indicate "engine cleaning" was this external or internal. IF internal, why was this necessary ? As you may know sludging is a problem with some of these engines, and you did the PCV mod at higher milage. Many including myself suspect poor design of the PCV as a prime contributor to sludge buildup. If a cleaning dislodged a bunch of hard sludged, this could easily have caused the turbo failure.
- I also have a leaky crank seal, which I believe was caused by the faulty PCV design.
- An older water pump can easily fail after the belt and pulleys have been serviced.
- See if the brushes can be replaced on the alternator, if that is what is failing.
On what basis is a brand new engine being recommended ? Are there problems beyond what you mentioned.
i think you should get some help from Saab and/or the dealer invovled, but you must relate things like a failed turbo and crank seal to the faulty PCV system or a sludge issue.
On my 1986 9000, at 225K miles the engine, turbo, starter, alternator, power steering pump, AC systems were all original and except for leaking turbo seals worked properly.
But I do the majority of my own services, I think this makes a difference as well as saving a lot of coin. If you place a premium on reliability, you should be driving a Japanese auto, as they excel there and many of these Saabs need a good deal of TLC and are higher cost vehicles to maintain.
Good luck with your problems
