Fuel Filter Installation Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Wed, 9 Mar 2005 15:42:07 In Reply to: fuel filter, bwalls, Wed, 9 Mar 2005 15:15:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've replaced the fuel filter on my 9-5 Aero several times over the last 250,000 miles. I recommend the following.
1) Follow Saab's frequency of change recommendation.
2) Use the exact Saab part or the Bosch equivalent. The part numbr is on the filter.
3) Have a set of new gaskets (2 smll and 2 large) on hand and USE THEM. Do not reuse the old ones.
4) Use a flouescent shop light to see......not one of those halogen 300-500W high intensity lights. They can ignite gas fumes.
5) Place a oil drain pan undr the filter. It's normal to have a few onces of fuel come out from the old filter. Only a couple of adjustable open-end wrenches and a 19mm box wrench are requied.
6) If practical, do the work outside. The gas fumes will dissipate more easily.
7) Don't smoke while you are doing this maintenance. Gas fumes ignite easily.
8) The special bolts that screw into each end of the filter are different sizes. The big bolt, the big gaskets, and the large hole in the end of the filter all go together.
9) The car will crank a little longer than usual while the system is being re-pressuarized and filling the new filter. Maybe 10-20 seconds.
10) After you have started the car, get underneath and carefully check for gas leaks.
