So far I've had to do a battery and SID in my 01 9-5 wagon.

Look after the car, fix things before they break, and it'll last a long time. I plan to replace DIC and serpentine belt pulleys and retorque head at 100k km (60,000 miles) which I will hit next year. Frequent oil changes (10,000km/6mo with quality full synthetic, forget semi synthetic) and quality filters will go a long way towards making the turbo last. Monitor brake wear and replace before wornout pads score the rotors. Change all the fluids every couple of years. Fix fluid leaks if you see them. Don't use any no-name parts or fluids.

I get the impression that many people that have big problems aren't really car people that depend solely on a mechanic or dealer for all their needs (eg. anyone that says 'my engine just blew') and possibly don't recognize the signs of something getting sick. Then when that serp belt idler pulley that's been squealing for two weeks explodes and the engine overheats....
