In addition to checking for corrosion in the left and right brake light sockets (and always a good idea to change both bulbs at the same time), have someone stand behind your car when you apply the brakes and get the failure warning, and look at the middle brake light unit in the rear window. That contains a strip of small individual incandescent bulbs, each with its own socket. One of the sockets on my 02 Aero had an intermittent short, so sometimes I'd get a brake light failure warning, other times not. When it became clear that cleaning the bad socket wouldn't fix the problem, the dealer replaced it under warranty. If you are out of warranty, it's an easy DIY job.
