I have a 1999 95 2.3t with a 5 speed manual transmission. During moderate to hard acceleration, something underneath the vehicle or within the engine compartment resonates at an engine speed of 2000 rpm. Its most easily heard with the engine under load in third or fouth gear.
The rasping noise can be heard within the car, even with the windows wound up. The noise sounds like that which would come from a resonating heat shield, brake backing plate, exhaust system baffle etc. All of those obvious things have been checked but nothing has yet been found. The noise is very difficult to trace and locate because it can't be replicated with the car stationary and the engine spinning over at about 2000 rpm.
It is also interesting to note that if the brake pedal is lightly pushed when the noise is heard, a power reduction can be felt and the vibration immediately stops. This may be something to do with the ECU cutting the turbocharger's boost pressure when the brakes are applied.
Any advice on where to look?
