I purchased a '99 9-5 (2.3 liter 5 spd) from it's original owner at 68,000 miles 3 years ago for about $15,000. Luckily, I did my homework and researched this Saabnet board for advice and verified the service records which the original owner had religiously kept. Consumer Reports seemed to be kind to Saab for a change and rated the car well that year, however, this early model year 9-5 had problems with bad soldering and/or gasketing affecting the ECU computer, but it had been replaced under warranty for the original owner. I subsequently had the turbo go out at 85,000 miles (and rebuilt it myself) and replaced the ignition cassette at about the same time. At 90,000 miles I did the serpentine belt and pulley replacement and finally found the source of a nagging and smelly oil leak by replacing the oil sending unit in the hard to see backside of the engine block. I've managed to temporarily extend the life of the heating/cooling blower motor brushes and at 98,000 miles, I'm due for shocks and front wheel bearings. I continue to patch up the original rear muffler with sheet metal, screws and high temperature silicone but I still haven't gotten around to attempting the repairs for the disappearing SID display pixels.

Obviously, I don't mind DIY (Do It Yourself) "car wrestling" and I greatly appreciate all the great help and information SaabNet has given me. I and my family survived a serious enough accident years ago in a Saab 900 Turbo and we find the 9-5 to be a solid, fast, fun, safe and classically styled Euroluxury car with fairly decent gas mileage (19 mpg city / 30+ highway ). I expect to run this car for another 50,000 miles at least. Like any European upscale import, you'll pay lots for usual needed repairs, unless you have the inclination and determination for DIY. If your not so inclined and can tolerate driving boredom, look for a Japanese car IMHO.....
