Push down on the corner of the car and let go abruptly. If the car bounces up and down a little to a lot, then you probably need new shocks. It seems like the rear are always the first to go though for some reason. Can you describe the noise that you hear? A "blown" shock shouldn't make noise. Maybe you have a bad wheel bearing.
