If you think that a SAAB 9-5 is going to be a welcome relief from maintenace costs you're in for quite a surprise.
As a longtime SAAB AND Subaru owner, my experience has been that Subarus may be less refined but their reliability overall is excellent - the regular maintenance costs, the repair/parts costs, etc...are all significantly lower than SAAB's.
My SAAB 9-5 needed a front and rear brake job at $750.00, four new Michelin Pilots at $650.00, a 60,000 mile service at $750.00 - all around the same time. That's AFTER the turbo unit had to be replaced at 43K for the blue smoke issue...hmmm...what happens when it does the same thing in another 30-40K - guess it would be my cost then....
Since I started driving Subarus in 1989, I have never had any single repair bill over half the cost of a new set of tires for the SAAB! Don't knock Subarus, around here they last forever, rarely leave owners stranded and are what they purport - utilitarian, reliable, and predictable - and My '05 Legacy GT is quicker than a 9-5 Aero anyday!
Good luck with your 9-5.
