Help Please--Suddenly Running Badly

Can anyone offer an opinion as to what I may be dealing with here?
My 1999 2.3 has suddenly this week (in concert with the huge warm-up in Philadelphia and the intense pollen season--but somwehow that CAN'T be it!)has suddenly started to run terribly.
As I sit in traffic my idle has suddenly become rough and unstable--it will drop, it will jump to 1400 whikle trying to stabilze. And as I pull off there are bumps, interruptions, skips , almost like it's missing.
Car has just under 36,000 miles. It had the regular 30K service at the dealer, and never indicated a problem before. FWIW, we were finally able to give it it's bath two weeks ago and and I hosed it off under the car and engine a lot.
It almost feels to me like an older carbureter and points car that I had many years ago when the head gasket was leaking (or my first car when it's distributor was shot). But I see no loss of coolant here, and I find it hard to believe that could be the issue at this mileage.
I know I need to get this to the dealer, but that probably won't be able to happen for another week or two.
In the meantime--anyone have an idea about the culprit and the monetary hit? Is this my cassette going (which if I could be convinced that were the issue at least I could save major money on that one)
Thanks all.
