Don't worry, be happy.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 27 Apr 2005 17:47:54 In Reply to: Should I be scared or happy? Sorry, I couldn't resist.
Brakes - I own a copy of the Saab book (I can't remember the title right now) which describes in great detail the gestation of the 9-5 as it was being brought to market. In this book the car's designers explain the trade-offs necessary when specifying brake hardware; feel, life expectancy, braking capability, noise, etc. They actually designed the brakes with an 18,000 mile life expectancy in the most severe conditions - described as North American city driving with an automatic transmission. I get 50-60,000 miles from a set of pads doing primarily expressway driving.
Battery - The original Saab batteries were not "maintenance free", they required periodic electrolyte inspections and additions. Many owners, including myself, assumed (and you know the trick with this word) the batteries were sealed, (as all others have been for the past 20 years!), and never lifted off the quilted battery cozie to see the cell covers. Needless to say, my OEM battery was short lived too.
Noise - It might be the A/C system expansion valve. These have been known to be noisy on some cars.
Enjoy your car, I love mine.
