A downpipe is the pipe off of the turbo it reduces the lag on the turbo and exhaust gas temps. The major advantage here is that it allows the engine to run in a safer range so your less prone to cause engine damage ie pistons. The performance benifit is that it allows the turbo to run more effciently thus creating more hp. On the 9-3 it increased the car 18hp and 30 ft pounds of torque on 91 octane gas. Below is the information that was found on the 9-3 by MP Performance.

The differance with the just adding on the ECU is that the car engine is going to have to work harder for the power causing the engine to run hotter and be more prone to problems. Upgrading the downpipe and intercooler is going to simply allow the car to run more effciently and create more power. We will be finishing up the intercooler design this weekend.
