He uses a programmable tension gauge from Gates, it measures the belt vibration between two points, it is available on the Gates European web site but not the US web site ?? . The tension is measured at #1 TDC between the crank pulley and the tensioner.
He sees variations of over 80Nm between engines. There are a lot of the GM V6 engines on the road in the UK and they have a good reputation for reliability and longevity. The main complaint seems to be cam cover gaskets leaking on high milage engines and filling up the plug holes with oil.
