I finally had the chance to take my new-to-me 01 SE wagon out and try out the new wheel/tire package. The 17s definitely give the car a sportier look -- losing the "station wagon" persona is a good thing to me. On the road the Kuhmo ASX ultra-performance all seasons handle MUCH better than the previous owner's 16" Conti Touring treads. I did a lot of tire research before buying and the Kuhmos were well reguarded. The sidewall flex is gone, which makes the car feel more stable in the turns. Overall the car feels more connected if that makes sence. However, on the interstate I was a little disappointed. The cushy ride is much firmer -- not quite "harsh" but a bit firmer than I thought it would be. Some patches of interstate you can really feel the washboard bumps. I guess I should have expected that, but I've never owned a car with low profile 17s either. Although, I do remember the Aero I drove had a similar feel ...and I would have gladly bought an Aero for the price of this SE! Overall it is a good compromise and the car looks MUCH cooler. I'll just need to get use to the firmer interstate ride. I'll have to shoot some photos for you all to see.
