Use the OEM 16s for snow or for road trips?

This is an odd time of year for this question, but the local Firestone dealer is having their annual sale (~25% off). I just bought a 01 wagon and upgrade the wheels to 17" EVOs. I'm not sure whether to use my OEM 16s as a touring/bad weather set or for installing dedicated winter only tires. I took the car on a road trip last week and was paranoid on all the rough rural state routes, especially after a few bad rail road crossings -- I've read too many "bent rim" posts. I'm in the Ohio valley and we see a few >4" snow falls a year but mostly 1-2" type. Hills however multiply the effects. When my wife's 9-3 had fresh All Season treads I couldn't beleive how great it did in the snow compared to my SUV. Does an SE wagon really need snow tires or would I be better off spending less on a good set of All Season tires which I can also use for hot weather road trips? Oh, the tires on the OEM rims are nearly bald.
