Paint problems - disaster!

I've got an '02 Aero in cosmic blue. I typically have it detailed (waxed) twice a year, and washed every two months or so.
I took it for detailing today, and it came back with massive spotting all over it. The detailer told me it was an effect of acid rain, eating through my clearcoat. The spots are actually slightly bumpy to the touch. A little elbow grease or application of the orbital buffer does not fix the problem.
The spots are all over the car (including glass and plastic trim), although they are worst on the hood. I am suspecting that the idiot detailer sprayed some sort of detergent on the car and then let it dry -- the hood drying fastest because it was warm.
I talked to another detailer who believes that it's probably something dried on the car or plus maybe some acid rain damage. He suggested going to a body shop and having the car wet sanded. Needless to say, I'm not too thrilled about that.
The original detailer denies allowing anything to dry on the car. Since there are still birdshit spots on the car even after his "detail" work, however, his credibility isn't too good. Needless to say, he's not getting paid.
I take decent care of the car. It's parked outside, but I spot treat birdcrap when it hits me. I don't go through automated car washes. I can't imagine that acid rain would do this to my car in such a short period of time (about six - eight months since my last pre-winter wax). Defective paint seems to be out of consideration since the plastic and glass is also affected (although much less so than the hood).
Any suggestions for me? This site is full of great tricks -- peanut butter, clay bar.... I'm desperate. Help!
