Can't clear "TIME FOR SERVICE" SID display

The "TIME FOR SERVICE" message has appeared on my SID. The owner's manual says to press the clear button to get rid of it until the next start-up - I did, and this works. The manual goes on the say to hold the Clear button for 8 seconds, after which a chime will sound and "SERVICE" will appear in the display, and it will then be reset. This does not seem to do the trick as there is no chime and no "SERVICE" in the display, as the message still appears next time I start the car.
Help.
