My car doesn't have LATCH (MY2000), so I use the regular seat belt in the middle seat. Both the rear-facing (fisher-price)and forward facing (cosco) car seats fit very securely with no lateral play.
My wife even brought the car to the police station so they could check it. They said it was fine, but ended up making it even more secure by wedging short section of a pool noodle between the seat and the car seat. The officer said that a "little bit" of forward-backward play is ok, provided the top tether is on properly.
On a side note, the officer had never seen a Saab's seat belt clip before - she was impressed to see the child seat setting.
Hope that helps,
Ed
