Great rule for working on machinery! I'll have to remember that.
One other note on the diagnostic side. You need to make sure that when you have all this back together, you have the motor/link arm set correctly. I guess I mean that when you re-install the assembly, you need to make sure the link arm position matches the setting on AC unit (recirc or not). Easy to do, but do not forget it. What I did was after I disassembled the unit and rebuilt it, I played with the recirc button and the assembly to see where the open setting was versus the closed. I then reached up in the dash to grab the main arm which opens and closes the flaps. In order to determine which position was open or closed, I listened to hear the airflow when the AC was on. The more airflow meant that the flap was on recirculated, less meant it was open to the outside. Just make sure the flaps and link arm are in the correct starting position when you re-install.
Also, the link arm on the assembly (the new part you ordered) does not "snap" or permanently connect to the main arm in the dash. It simply goes under the main arm after you have assembled it. The link arm works simply by being in the right position and with gravity. I thought this was weird, but it actually works.
Let me know how you make out.
