brake trouble

I just installed new brake pads on my car. I had no trouble installing the pads and getting the calipers back together but when i took the car for a spin the brakes kept fading so i figured that there might be air in the lines. So i released the brake bleeders one at a time, pumped the brakes, and bled the system. I then topped it off with some carquest dot4 brake fluid. Now the brake pedal keeps going flat and the car has little to no braking ability. I'm confused. The only thing i can think of is perhaps i did not bleed the system the right way. I closed the valve with the pedal all the way upright. Am i supposed to do this when it is all the way down. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need my car tomorrow!
