through a company called "Drive Assured", based in Florida. The warranty was "thrown in" as part of the used car purchase, so I'm not sure how much it really cost me.

Last fall, I had a failed idler pulley. The result was a shredded belt, failed belt tensioner, water pump, and coolant overflow. Total damage was $1300 CAD.

So I called the warranty company who said they would cover the pulley replacement only ($126). They said all the other damage was caused by the belt failure, which is a wear and tear item and therefore not covered. My service advisor even got on the phone with them saying that were it not for the failed pulley, then none of the other damage would have happened.

They refused it still and I was resigned to paying for the rest of it. I did, however, write a letter explaining my frustration over their unreasonable policy and threatened to cancel my warranty (thereby forcing them to refund me a pro-rated amount of the cost of the warranty - about $1200).

I really didn't expect anything, so I was surprised to get a last-mintue christmas present and apology from Drive Assured. In the end, the entire cost of the repair was covered. But at the cost of a lot of time and stress.

In the future, if I get an extended warranty, I think I'll get one directly from the manufacturer. It will cost a little more, but might be worth the piece of mind.

I'm not sure if you find this helpful, as it is just one guy's experience. Many members here have found the aftermarket warranties to have been very worthwhile, while others see it as a waste of money.

It has also been suggested here to simply put aside the money that you would have spent for a warranty as an emergency repair fund. Simple but effective.

Good luck with your decision.
