First, thanks for the link.
At least this is the last "enhancement" until the full 9-5 makeover. To me, the '06 front evokes the confusion of Subaru's B9 Tribeca, the rear the triteness of an Audi's (or Avalon's) tailight "tabs," and the entire feeling another step away from the subtly classic, sophisticated lines of the original 9000CDs and 9-5s. Chalk it up to one-upping the market competition--inevitable in today's quest for testosterone and homogeneity, not to mention dumping function for trendier aesthetics. Am I the only one who misses the practical (and interchangeable) black mirrors and door handles, and the contrasting rub strips of certain older models . . . not to mention bumpers that could take a nudge without full, sacrificial scratching? Now that everything is gussied up and body color keyed, it's a matter of being just like everyone else in the market . . . racking up extra expenses for paint matching, and in turn the potential bottom line for GM body shops. So much for SAAB's independence, at least in these categories.
The good news is that with time, my favored / more practical styles stand to get closer to "retro" and maybe even a hint at the next-gen 9-5. Time capsule this message and see. Meantime, I'll keep admiring my 2001's understated, leaner design balance as long as it lasts.
