Yes I came close to DIY (Damaging It Yourself) on this twice!! Corrosion is the culprit with the wiper arm and spindle connection. The first time was my "good for 6 months" repair of the worn motor brushes when I let the wiper arm w/o the blade slip and the spring whacked it against the glass!! Got lucky with only a small scratch. Real lucky, in fact, since it was a nearly brand new OEM replacement windshield!! I wondered if it might have been glued slightly lower on the car because the clearance to extract the blower motor wasn't enough to keep from having to squeeze the plastic squirrel cage fan to the point of cracking it!! Heat welding the crack with a soldering iron was the easiest way to stop the cage from spreading open under centrifugal force and scrape up the blower housing with much noise.. Eventually, my temporary motor brush fix wore out and I had to buy the new blower. Being new (and more flexible) the fan went in a litle better w/o damage. However, trying to pry off the wiper arms with a lever and screw ball joint tool was successful, but not without the risk again of near windshield breakage.
We love our Saabs and also must love the sometimes hazardous fun of DIY car wrestling!!!
