I think Dean's on the right track.

I've got an 01 SE that has been sputtering at start sometimes and fine other times. Always runs fine after that.

My dlr is going to clean out my engine and replace all the fuel injectors (under warranty). Dlr has tried this on others with this problem and know the solution works. It took Saab a few months to agree to take pay for this remedy, but are now doing so on the west coast. I understand the solution can be different in different regions of the country. Saabs' original solution was to tell you to careful what gas you use, they've given up on that as a remedy in my area.

Having said all that, I never had to turn the key 3 times to start, so perhaps you've got a different problem.
