Granted, for max traction you want most weight over the driving wheels but if you want to stop in a straight line you want the braking in the front. I grew up on a lake before global warming and we often used the frozen lake as a short cut to town. Of course as a teenager one had to see how many spins one could do in a 49 Merc. The surest way to induce a spin was to pull on the hand brake. When I bought my first 9000 and passed my 900s on to my children I was disappointed that Saab had not continued to have the hand brake act on the front wheels as in the classic 900. I guess they figured that ABS somehow compensates although if the hydraulic brakes failed you would still be better off in a 900.

Ever try to stop a bicycle on loose gravel? Much more control if you brake more with the front brake than with the back.
