A number of things surprise me :

- that Saab ever employed capacitive discharge ignition - BMW and Mercedes experimented in the late 60s, but abandoned it due to reliabilty, and their electronics were not ontop of the engine. Granted solid state reliability has come a long way, but engines now run hotter and the repeated stress of cool down then heat is a killer on silicon.

- that they did so little to address the failures and did not revert back to a conventional ignition discharge design.

- that they are not stepping up to recall other model years - this is a maker known for promoting safety, and in the eyes of the NHTSA a DI failure causing stalling is indeed a safety issue. So are they really concerned about the safety of their owners ? I think that they know the real truth is that 1999 is likely a bad year for the DI as well.

- that the quoted announcement said something to the effect that a DI failure could result in "overheating " issue. This kind of deception or whatever you choose to term it could ultimately backfire on them in a big way.

- Also the NHTSA job is to protect consumers from vehicles with defects that pose safety risks - so it appears that the number of complaints were small, but they acted on them. So should more owners that experienced failures, particularily those in the excluded model years file reports- guess what the NHTSA can easily extend the model years needing recall.

I filed a complaint with the NHTSA this am, and had that exact discussion with them - one can file over the web or via phone. They are definately interested in hearing about failures affecting other model years.
