As far as I can ascertain, the changer operates only with the agreement of the computer system, you can't plug any old changer (even another Saab one) in without 'marrying' it to the car using the... you guessed it... dealers computer.
The jury is still out regarding whether this is done for reasons of security, or so that Saab can gouge even more money out of their customers than they do flogging faulty SIDs, bonnet badges, DICs (until last week) and so on at full commercial rates.
I expect getting a toggle system to work properly would be a reasonably significant undertaking requiring some fairly clever electronic engineering. Of course the easiest way to go is an itrip or similar fm transmitter. You don't get the integration with the SID, but chances are, you can't read it anyway.
