According to my sources, when it fails ,it is supposed to be a soft failure, that is, the alarm simply would not activate. The alarm should not trigger on it's own simply bacause the batteries in the module have failed. There are excellent instructins that can be searched for on this site that detail how to replace the batteries in a 1999 model, but since then the units have been sealed instead of put together with a split style case, so you have to replace the entire unit if you have a newer car. Time to remove and replace the failed unit should not be more than about 30 minutes if the car is on a lift, since you have to remove the left front wheel and then pull back the inner fender well trim to get to the unit. With the car on the floor and jacked up by one wheel, probably twice the time and a few more bruised knuckles. I tried it on my 2002 and found out that the case is sealed on mine.
