I don't know what year your car is, but I will relate the experience I had. Our 9-5 is a 1999, and ever since new, there was a "mysterious" and annoying rattle from the real. After checking all of the things that have been mentioned here, I finally found the problem. The trunk hinge on the 9-5 rests on an adjusting screw, which I believe is designed to keep the trunk lid at a certain height. In any event, on my 1999, the hinge made contact with the adjusting screw (which it is supposed to do), and every time I hit a sharp bump it sounded like a a shock was broken or loose. My answer was to cut a piece of hose with the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of the screw, and cut the hose so that it goes around the screw and fits snug on the screw. Cut it off at the height of the screw. This STOPPED the noise completely. I have noticed that on more recent 9-5 cars, there is a plastic piece on the hinge that probably accomplishes the same thing. By the way, I had asked the Dealer about this rattle, and of course no body else ever complained about this. Hope this helps.
