Throttle Body Woes - Will check light go out

My 2001 aero (36k - well out of warranty on time) has got check engine and TCS off lights on, and was running badly/stalling/failing to idle. After some spirited revving its now usable, with a higher than normal idle. Everything Ive read says this is the throttle body, and the limp home mode has now clicked in.
Im wondering,
1. Safe to drive in the short term?
2. If I replace the throttle body using the excellent photo instructions on this board - which I think I can do, will I have to have a fault code cleared out of the computer by the dealer, or will it eventually clear itself. I know other conditions like not tightening the gas cap enough that case the CEL do eventually clear by themselves, will that happen in this case, and how long will it take?
3. Should I just forget all this, and take it to my local indie for a proper diagnosis and cure.
