Sorry to hear.

I wouldn't trust the tensioner assembly more than 60K miles so it should have been replaced at 98K when they did the belt.

Not all mechanics knows about this and the dealers doesn't suggest changing tensioner by default every 60K miles since it is not condoned by Saab/GM.

It is probably many V6 engines where the tensioner last 120K miles but that doesn't help the ones where it failed before that.

I have done a couple of Google searches on the topic to see if the Saturn engine have the same failure rate but is not that many hits so I assume GM don't have enough complaints to do anything about it.

If you can find a good Saab independant shop it might be less costly since they can use GM parts instead. Saab doesn't sell valve guides for instance so they are cracked, Saab install a new cylinder head instead.

It still probably will be around $2500.00-3000.00 to remove both heads and check for damage, replace some valves and put everything back together with a new belt and tensioner assembly.
