Mixing oil brands?

My dealer has been putting Aral Tronic 0W40 (fully synth.) in my 2000 9-5 Aero since new - and so far I have always topped up with exactly the same oil.
However, at 16 EUR/litre this oil costs almost the same as a new engine (OK, I'm exaggerating slightly) and it's difficult to find outside Luxembourg/Germany.
Would I risk anything by using another brand as long as it's also 0W40 (fully synth.)? Mobil 1 0W40, for example, can be found almost anywhere (e.g. rural Romania) and is somewhat cheaper. I seem to remember reading something about different oil brands' additives "cancelling each other out" and thus you might mix two good oils and end up with one bad mixture!
Is this just an old wives' tale or what do the oil-savvy users of this BB reckon?
Regards,
Caspar
