You shouldn't take a check until you know how much its going to cost. Since you accepted the amount they offered you, they may balk or refuse to pay more. Usually (like 99% of the time) insurance companies offer less than what the repair will cost.

The dealer will almost certainly charge more than the amount of the check. Insurance companies issue money based on aftermarket and/or used parts at a low hourly rate. The dealer will use OEM parts and definitely won't have a low hourly rate.

An example: My 9000 was involved in an accident last summer. After visual inspection, my insurance issued me a check for about $900. I had already had the repair appraised for close to $4,000. Obviously I didn't accept the check. But, had I taken the money (according to wording in the paperwork), I would have agreed to that amount and they would not have given me more. After about a month of haggling, they finally paid up and my Saab is as good as new with only new OEM parts.
