Crayons are made from paraffin wax.
Polyethylene & polypropylene plastics will give off a paraffin wax smell when heated; although pure paraffin has no odor. I think it's possible that crayons contain stearic acid which can be added to paraffin for hardening. It is also added to candles for hardening, which also have a similar "crayon" smell when you blow them out.
Stearates can also be used as polymer stabilizers. This takes us back to those two plastics in paragraph 2. When the plastic heats up, the odor given off is that of stearic acid.
The darker interiors tend to heat up more than others which could explain the Saab "charcoal effect".
How's that for logic?
