SID display problems with missing pixels (or rows and columns of them) are common, often caused by inadequate electrical connection between flextapes (flexible tapes with embedded electrical conductors) and circuit boards. Inside the SID these flextapes are used to interconnect separate subassemblies, notably the display. On this Saabnet board you'll find a number of suggested repairs aimed at using some additional material (foam, weatherstripping) to apply some force on the flextape connectors where they meet the circuit board (or display board). Checkout http://www.users.waitrose.com/~randmwilliams/ I tried this, but had only limited success - never got the entire display back working. A new SID unit costs near $700 and even a rebuilt one (from Saab) costs over $300. On this board I found a guy up in Vermont who repairs them in what sounded like a very thorough and controlled way - and he has a test rig to check his results. He charges $95. I shipped to him on Sunday and got my display back on Friday - all segments, rows and columns now work - it's like new. I cannot speak to whether this repair will last or not, but it's certainly a pleasure to have the full display back. He has a userid on this board - it's "gsenesac".
