Egads! I did the same job two weeks ago w/o thermostat - dealer did that 3k miles ago w/ new head gasket, so I was saved from that hell. I did tackle the heater bypass valve (on the firewall), which was no treat.
However, the lower hose was a bear! I took out air inlet plumbing, lower splash shield, short rubber pipe connected to MAF on topside. I didn't have to take out turbo plumbing - I could sort of work around it. I was also lucky enough to have Crafstman cable actuated band clamp pliers to get the hose clamp off - I never could have fit conventional pliers in that small space to work clamp off.
I ended up spending 3+ hours on the lower hose alone. My car is also a MY2000, and the old original hose was in great shape!?! With all of the clutter removed, at least I was able to torque up the notoriously leaky ATF cooler connections at the radiator - they were pretty damn loose.
My knuckles are still smarting from the job.
