I work at a Saab service shop in Maine, and we do find that one in every 10 or so 9-5's has a bad turbo evidenced by a puff of smoke on startup. Usually the shaft seal allows seapage into the exhaust and gets burned off. The main concern is usually for the CAT, and not the performance of the turbo, which is usually fine.
As for the timing chain, I see a lot of 9-5 owners that like to believe that they can run 2-8k/mi over their recommended oil change intervals. I had a car that was bought at auction in my bay yesterday and her engine (2.0 low pressure turbo) was getting noisey up top. Usually, I would suspect neglect as the number-one reason for this kind of noise at 92k/mi on the odo. Bad oil is a quick occurance on these engines if you: A)Use dino-oil; or B)Go far beyond your recommended interval. The cat sits right under the oilpan and heats up the oil pretty quickly. If your oil isn't up to the task, it will form heavy sludgey deposits and clog the pickup screen and starve the lubrication system of pressure. Even if the sludge gets moved throught the screen, it can get stuck in the timing-tensioner and make the piston unable to extend by spring-pressure alone. Usually, just removing the oilpan and replacing the tensioner can solve the problem, but sometimes the problem has chewed through some teeth on the gears too.
Hope this helps!
