I took 8AA2YM's advice and flushed the brake fluid myself with a brake
bleeder kit. I have some observations and hints for people who may want
to do it as well.
First, order from eEuroparts. I made the mistake of ordering from
http://www.trackhaus.com because they had a larger selection. I ordered a
brake bleeder. They sent me a catch bottle. They eventually straightened
things out, but I was plenty angry for a while. I've never had
any such problems with any online retailer, no less eEuroparts who have
been excellent.
Second, I suggest that you use disposable latex gloves. eEuroparts carries
these as well. Work gloves are too thick and you don't want to contaminate
your work gloves with brake fluid.
I removed the wheels to flush the brake fluid. The bleeder valve is
accessible from behind the wheel with car jacked up, but since my garage
is small I had trouble maneuvering my jack (a real one, not the one
found in the trunk) and a jack stand under the car when doing the
driver's side. Also, I don't think it's a good idea to bleed the brakes
while lying down under the car with poor lighting.
You'll need a 9mm wrench for the bleeder valve nut.
You'll need a little oil for the top of the brake bleeder which is the
pump which pressurizes the brake system.
You'll probably need a tubing longer than the one that comes in the box
with the power bleeder. I don't know what size, but I just took the
tubing to the hardware store and said "I need X feet of this"
For catch bottle, you can use a used bottle of motor oil.
And the order in which you have to flush brake fluid is Passenger Side Front, Driver side Rear, Driver side Front and Passenger Side Rear.
Brake fluid flushing is one of the DIY operations which pays for itself,
even with power brake bleeder and box of latex gloves, especially for me
since I flushed brake fluid on my motorcycle as well.
Cheers,
jae
