I thought I would put my 2 cents on my new Nokian WR's. I have a 2001 Aero wagon which had some ailing michilen pilot sport A/S on them. They were a good tire in the rain and their hot weather cornering wasn't bad but they were becoming very noisy. I know the right thing to do would have been buy a seperate wheel and tire package for winter ad keep the 17's on in the summer. But because buying all that at once was a little steep I went ahead and rolled the dice on buying the WR's in the 225 45 v17, and plan to keep them on year round I know the best all season tires are not good snow tires, nor are snow tires the best in all seasons. I also no that the 225 45 17 size is not every one's chioce for ice and snow. However in the 2 months I have had these tires I can tell you this:
Dry traction: When I bought these it was still fairly warm out - I think I had a couple days of 72 degrees. I was expecting worse than what they are. Yes i think high speed cornering suffers but what the hell - how many corners do I need to take at 80 mph with 2 car seats in back(yes twins). To me this isn't hardly a compramise at all. I think these can handle everyday dry handleing(even somewhat spirited)
road noise: Not noisy at all! I was expecting them to sing. They are a little more noisy going through water but that is all I have noticed. Much qieter than tne michilens I had on.
Ice/snow traction: Ecellent. I could not be happier with this aspect of thier performance. I have had every kind of winter weather here in 2 weeks. Ice, snow, deep mush from bad combinations or roadplows and frozen brine. Not to mention sub zero temperatures. What really has ipressed me is my stopping distance in this slick stuff. My ABS haven't come on when I have come to a stop. Icy, snowey intersections that other people slide right through. I actually had to test them on a long patch of ice in a mall parking lot to see if my abs were still working. THey were.
My conclusion is if you are looking for a great all season tire where you may want to give up a little of the dry performance for a lot more winter safety than these are the tires.
