You can't conclude that none of these spoilers help. When the air has to make a sharp bend around the squared-off end of a wagon, it creates a lot of drag and turbulence which can reduce fuel economy. Some spoilers help here. I remember reading that the spoiler on the 9-3 Aero sedan actually does help aerodynamics. Check out this product, which you might want to try.

I bought some, planned to put them on my soon-to-be purchased 9-3 SportCombi, but the vehicle includes a spoiler with a slight contour, not sure if it will fit. It seems to make sense scientfically, and there are some customer testimonials. One guy says he improved fuel economy 10% with his Honda CR-V by putting them on all three sides, (see pic). They're not pretty, but if just placed on the roof, few people will see them.
Take it easy,
Atul
