Howdy. I'm new to 9-5 having just bought a 2002 Aero wagon that I haven't even picked up yet. That said, I've been doing a lot of research lately.

I don't think the '99's are "bad", but there is a greater chance that those earlier ones were serviced to the 10,000 mile oil changes, so they have a greater chance of having problems. If you find a well cared for example chances are you'll find a good car.

I bought an '02 because of the numerous upgrades to the model. Perhaps the one disadvantage is that the bumpers in low speed crash testing had roughly 2x the repair costs of the '01 and earlier units. Do a web search (including here on TSN) for 2002 9-5 to see all the upgrades they did in that year.

All said though, you really need to find a car that was well cared for. Maintainence will have a greater factor in his relationship with the car than the model year designation.
