Battery & foot-in-mouth disease

It was just a couple days ago that I replied to a message about battery life saying that the battery in my '97 Ranger is still original and the one on our '93 Honda Accord lasted about 7 years before giving up.
Today, the battery in our '02 9-5 died. Why a battery in a SAAB should be so short-lived is beyond me. All it does is start the car.
There are a couple factors at work. The car was built in April and we didn't buy it until mid September. Batteries lose about 10% of their charge per month and batteries at less than full charge have significantly reduced life spans. I can't say for sure that ours was allowed to run down while the car sat on a lot, but I suspect it was, based on my observations of dealership practices. How much this affected the life pof the battery, I can't say.
Also, SAAB uses a cover over the entire battery, supposedly to protect it from underhood heat. It probably also holds the heat in after you stop.
A local battery shop wanted $85 for a 5 year warranty battery, prorated after 1 year. Sears wanted $123 for a Diehard, 8 year warranty, prorated after 3 years (well, they quoted $110, but when I got there, they said there was a $13 installation charge, while the other guy charged nothing to install). This being a Friday afternoon before Christmas, the Interstate dealer was closed. With some reluctance, I went with the Diehard--I was already there. If SAABs are really hard on batteries, I'll let Sears keep replacing it.
