Today I passed by a Saab dealer and so I stopped by to take a look at that much maligned creature called 2006 Saab 95. Incidentally I was in my 01 Aero wagon and the wagon on the dealer lot was the same color as mine so I had the opportunity to compare them side by side.

From my point of view, I am no Saab purist as I have owned a Saab only for 4 months, the new wagon looks very much like my old wagon, and that's inside and out. I grant that the front fascia, especially the chome highlights take a bit of getting used to. Here I think the 93 front is a bit better. But the outside shape it still very unique and recorgnizable and little changed beyond the front fascia. The interior looks also very much like mine with a bit of improvement, specifically the 3-spoke steering wheel looks very nice. Overall I think Saab interior is the best in the business, better the Audi, contrary to what all the auto writers think. Most of it is preserved and the buttons seems to be improved a bit. I also looked at the leather, and I am understand leather a bit, and I can say that the leather is at elast equal if not better queality than the current Saabs. It's a bit rougher grain but that means that it will be longer lasting. Saabs traditionally used very soft leather which is very nice to touch but is not as durable as the courser leather used by the Germans. The leather used now is a bit courser but will stand the test of time better. I dare say if cared for properly the leather will be indestructible.

All in all, the death of "real" Saab has been much overstated. The current Saab is still the same old Saab most of us like and to me abou the same or a bit improved aesthetically.
