serpentine belt replacement...middle pulley

I had ordered parts to do this a while ago when I was getting some other parts. At one point, I was going to do just replace the belt. Then I read that pulleys should be replaced as well, and also read about the short belt mod. So I ordered pulleys and the short belt.
By the time I got around to this, I had read that Saab no longer recommends the short belt mod, since I had both belts, I decide to put the long on one.
I did that today. Thanks to all who have posted links and info on how to do this. I found the job straight forward, and except for the rain dripping down my neck, somewhat enjoyable.
But, somewhere along the line, I either never ordered (most likely) or lost the middle idler pulley. Since the belt had cracks and the top idler pully was making noise, I went ahead and did the job (using the long belt) and left the middle pulley in place. It seemed ok when I spun it. No play. No noise.
The question is how often does the middle pulley cause problems, and should I go ahead and order one up. I think I can replace it by just removing the engine mount and relieving the tension on the belt.
Getting that bolt out will be a challenge, but I think I can make a tool to do it (saw a link somehwere on this).
I have about 54k on a '99 9-5.
Thanks.
James
