I don't know much about the shifting, I have a 99 2.3 SE auto, and sometimes it does shift a little hard. But it is an auto, and they have a mind of their own. except for my bad knee I would have bought a manual, and the turbo lag, that is expected. check the time of day and outside temp. the colder it is outside, the less lag you will get. But as far as the rough idle, that is just a typical trait of a 4 banger. that is why MOST lux cars have (smaller) V's in them (V6s, and V8s) because they run much smoother. I think it has to do with the fact that the pistons don't have to travel as far in a V to spin the drive shaft. the 4s have to travel further, and it is a more violent motion, I think. I have owned several 4, and several Vs (both 6 and 8, and even a few strait 6s.) and they run a lot smother, even though they are older, and a lower class of vehicle. But a bottle of injector/valve cleaner, will help it a bit. I usualy add one every 5 tanks of gas if using 91, and every 3 if I get stuck using anything less. (87 or 89) and it defiently helps.
