With Winter Break winding down I know a lot of college students, both under-grad and graduate, as well as their parents, will soon begin planning/worrying about Summer Break.
Last summer I delivered my Law School son to New York City for an unpaid externship with a NYC Law Office. After spending only 1-1/2 days in the City I was extremely envious of the opportunity he had for the next 11 weeks. If only I had had that same chance while I was in my early 20's!
At least two universities, NYU and Columbia, open their dorms to non-matriculating students for the summer. Although no one considers dorms to be "cool", they provide safe, affordable, temporary housing - and eliminate the food/cooking concerns.
My son's NYU dorm room was air conditioned and directly across the street from Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village. Of his three room-mates, one was from Univ of Florida (my son's Law School) interning with the David Letterman Show, one was a Univ North Carolina student taking summer classes at NYU, and the fourth was also there for a summer job.
I strongly encourage any student who has not yet experienced big city living to investigate a summer in NYC, either as part of an internship or as part of summer classes to be transfered to their home university. It will be an unforgetable experience of a lifetime!
