The 4 cylinder has less friction because there is less surface area of piston contacting the cylinder. I think similarly, there is less combustion "stuff" getting past the cylindr rings because of less circumference of ring per liter of displacment. I wonder if it is lighter crankshaft per displacement or output.
On the other hand, 4 cylinders have more vibration and a balance shaft saps some energy from the engine.
