Transmission CEL light on

Hello, My 2000 LPT wagon has the transmission CEL on. I thought it was the transmission range switch.
Can a generic OBD2 reader read Transmission codes? AutoZone?
When I shift from P to D the dash display does not move and the car shifts to 3rd gear. After rowing the selector, the car will shift into R,ND2 but not 1 or 3. In D it will drive normally.
But I call an independent shop and they said that they have never replaced one and acted surprised I thought that was the culprit.
Anyone have details on RR of the range switch?
Thanks
Brian
