Why do they fail so early, and is it just the Garret?

Sounds like you have done everything that is practically possible to avoid the problem. Given the care you've taken, I wouldn't think that any sort of oiler or timer will help much. $650 should get you another rebuilt turbo at 100k if it comes to that.
Make sure you use synth oil and changed much more regularly than they recommend, but judging by the sound of you that might already be the case.
Why do they keep failing early? Seems to be mostly the LPT Garret unit. Just a rubbish quality/design turbocharger? What is the earliest Aero failure on the list??
I looked at the turbo's oil supply line on my 2000 Aero when I checked the sump, and it was squeaky clean, no sludge or buildup. Is the oil supply line routing or position different for Aeros and LPTs? How about the oil drain? On the Aero's Mitsubishi it is a monster 1" diameter or so, straight back to the sump.
All very interesting, but there's no way a turbo should last 3-4 years and 50k under anything but extreme torture. My Dad's Mazda MX6 2.2 turbo is on the original turbo- a 1990 model with 275,000km. The turbo whines a little when cold, it could probably do with a rebuild, but it still works just fine and the car doesn't use a drop of oil. What gives?
Cheers
Steve
