I'm replacing brake pads. I have some questions.

I attempted to replace the front brake pads yesterday. I have a
Haynes manual and WIS.
The instructions say to "Press back the Piston". I tried using the
slip-joint plier that I already had. The thing would not even budge.
How much force is required to press back the piston? Just in case,
I bought a couple of bigger pliers today. I'm hoping the longer handles
give me the extra leverage I need.
After I press back the piston and remove the brake caliper clip, will
I be able to unscrew the guide pins by hand? If not, what kind of
tool is required to unscrew the guide pins?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers,
Jae
